Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the Office of Judicial Affairs at Syracuse University. The student conduct system supports the rights and responsibilities deemed necessary to learn and live in our campus community. The Office of Judicial Affairs strives to promote a safe and respectful environment through its staff, procedures, programs, and collaborations. If a student fails to uphold their community responsibility, the University student conduct system is committed to providing a fair, reflective, and developmental resolution process.  On behalf of the Office of Judicial Affairs staff, I invite you to peruse our website to learn more details about our office.

Cyber Bullying Response

Cyber bullying, cyber stalking, and cyber harassment are increasingly common.  Recent tragic events have placed these issues in the forefront of our minds.  Syracuse University’s Office of Judicial Affairs responds to such behaviors through our Code of Student Conduct, which can be found in the Judicial System Handbook 2011-2012. The Code of Student Conduct items that address cyber bullying, cyber stalking, and cyber harassment include:

Code 1) Physical harm or threat of physical harm to any person or persons, including but not limited to: assault, sexual abuse, or other forms of physical abuse.

Code 2) Harassment, whether physical or verbal, oral or written, which is beyond the bounds of protected free speech, directed at a specific individual(s), easily construed as "fighting words," and likely to cause an immediate breach of the peace.

Code 3) Conduct which threatens the mental health, physical health or safety of any person or persons including hazing, drug or alcohl abuse, and other forms of destructive behavior.

Code 14) Violation of any federal, state, or local law which has a negative impact on the well-being of Syracuse University or its individual members.

Code 15) Violation of University policies, rules or regulations that are published in the Student Handbook, or other official University publications or agreements. (e.g. Computer Use Policy using Syracuse computing systems)

The Judicial Handbook is being revised for the academic year 2012-2013 where these three behaviors will be expressly named: cyber bullying, cyber stalking, and cyber harassment.  This level of specificity will make the conduct process more useful to students and parents.
